Praised by critics as a “polished lyric tenor,” Joseph McBrayer has quickly emerged as an exciting young artist to watch. Originally from Dallas, Georgia, Mr. McBrayer recently completed a two-season residency as a Studio Artist with Florida Grand Opera, where he appeared as Beppe in Pagliacci, a role he recently reprised with Amarillo Opera , Gastone in La Traviata, Paolino in Il Matrimonio Segreto, and Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi. He also traveled to Santa Fe to create the role of The Mayor of Santa Fe in the world premiere of Joe Illick’s opera Zozobra’s Revenge.

Previously, Mr. McBrayer served as Indianapolis Opera’s Resident Artist Tenor during the 2020–21 season, performing in numerous virtual recitals and appearing as Goro in the company’s first live production following the COVID-19 shutdown. He later returned to Indianapolis Opera for additional productions, including an innovative pairing of Hans Krása’s Brundibár and Lori Laitman’s Vedem.

A winner of the 2019 Georgia District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Mr. McBrayer was invited to join Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as a Gerdine Young Artist for both the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Internationally, he spent the summer of 2018 in Tel Aviv as part of the Joshi International Fellowship Summer Opera Program, where he performed the role of Tamino in Die Zauberflöte among other appearances.

Reviews:
Romeo (Title Role) Shakespeare Opera Theatre

Immediately upon Joseph McBrayer’s entrance as Romeo, I liked his interpretation. He added to the comedy of the first part of the show by coloring the character with appropriate melodrama and naiveté. Not only that, but his voice is a tenor that delivers gorgeous high notes, as in his aria “Ah! Lève-toi soleil” and a full dynamic range, even moving toward a vulnerable falsetto at one point. Both the voice and acting made for a Romeo that I wanted to root for. - operatoday.com

Mr. McBrayer had me at his first aria, a lovely voice singing beautifully, a good complement for Juliet. - opergene.com

Beppe (Pagliacci) Florida Grand Opera

Joseph McBrayer’s polished lyric tenor made Beppe’s Serenade a highlight of the play scene and he sang the inserted “Non ti scordar di me” with idiomatic fervor and a natural sense of pulse and line. - South Florida Classical Review

Gastone (La Traviata) Florida Grand Opera

Joseph McBrayer was a characterful Gastone, his tenor strong and virile.- South Florida Classical Review
